Fell Poets host Simon Armitage on his Pennine Way adventure

In July 2010, award winning poet Simon Armitage is walking the Pennine Way and writing a book about his experiences. On the 15th of July Simon will be taking a break at the charming village of Dufton in Cumbria. In conjunction with the Fell Poets Society he will be performing some of his work, including from his latest book "Seeing Stars" in a small and intimate venue.

Troubadour

Luckily for the audience, tickets are free as Simon will be carrying out his tour in the style of an old fashioned troubadour. Wherever he stops for the night on the 264 mile journey he will give a poetry reading. "There'll be no charge for the reading, but at the end of the evening I'm going to pass a hat round, and people can give me what they think I'm worth," says Simon. " I want to see if I can pay my way from start to finish on the proceeds of my poetry."

Dufton

Dufton, which sits on the doorstep of the spectacular High Cup Nick, provides perfect backdrop to an evening of poetry. The stunning Pennine fells surrounding Dufton are renown for their outstanding natural beauty inspiring poets and artists alike. W.H. Auden wrote the poem "New Year Letter" with Dufton in mind, so it is quite fitting that Simon Armitage, one of the nation's finest poets is taking his turn on this well trodden path. Meeting him along the way will be a few of the Fell Poets, one of whom is Alastair Dunn, an accomplished fell runner and budding poet. "We are delighted to be hosting this special evening with Simon Armitage. The Fell Running community is a small and welcoming one and we hope to provide a warm and friendly evening for all those who are interested in hearing such an acclaimed poet read live. A few of the Fell Poets will be running up the spectacular Dufton fells to meet Simon en route and welcome him to this beautiful little village, with perhaps a pint or two to settle him in at the pub afterwards."

The performance starts at 8pm. All tickets must be collected on the door by 7.30 otherwise it will be assumed you are no longer able to attend, so they will be made available to all-comers on a first-come first-served basis.
